lady gaga photographed by Nobuyoshi Araki
fashion direction by Nicola Formichetti
Vogue Hommes Japan
(lady gaga's outfit reminds me of the Sci Fi/Horror outfits worn by female mad scientists in the 50s, as well as the S/M rainwear favored by pioneer photographer John Willie. As when Mario Testino shot her for a recent edition of V, Araki seems an ideal photographer to capture a certain facet of her persona: the consciously sexual avid performer of cultural appetites. lady gaga joins the short list of female sirens who play with the image embedded in their music; which for me includes when PJ Harvey donned a sleazy pink catsuit zipped down to the navel
to expose a stylish black bra, or when Hole-era Courtney Love wore little girls' dresses and matching patent leather Mary Jane shoes, or Grace Jones nearly nude beneath a structured futuristic man's suit, or Betty Davis (Miles' ex) working the lingerie look in the 70s long before it was a safe mainstream staple and before Prince established his assembly line of protegees, or Siouxie Sioux in just about any of her onstage outfits. Everyone has their own list, or hall of mirrors, or style museum of wicked looks that stick in their minds).

what a month. my mom almost died last nite from an insulin coma. i got two speeding tickets withing days of each other (almost $400 for the first one,yo!!!), i saw a picture that made me cold to the bone, i took my nephew Stevie for a bike ride and went primevil!, have been waking up to myself and my own in the middle of the cold cold morning, and yet i have a small gang of friends who give me hope. just a few years ago, i had no gang of friends, i was sleeping in my car, and i couldn't even cry. now i am happy, and i cry. weird.
so much horrible shit attacked me today/tonite. so i drove to the ocean. (dinosaur sholes in Pismo Beach)BUT... for some weird reason, my best friend david called me, and we talked about life. and it made me happy about life.
